IN SHORT: A photo is circulating on Facebook with the claim it shows coffins of 674 Ugandan soldiers killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). But that’s not true; it shows victims of the Ugandan presidential helicopter crash from 2005.
Users claim it shows Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers receiving the bodies of 674 of their colleagues killed in a rebel ambush in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
According to the posts, the soldiers were killed in a major attack while serving in the DRC and their bodies were quietly returned to Uganda, specifically to Gulu Barracks.
Gulu Barracks is a major military base in Gulu in northern Uganda, near the border with South Sudan. It plays a key role in UPDF operations, including peacekeeping, counter-insurgency efforts and regional security initiatives.
“This information is being deliberately hidden from the public, to the extent that even the acting UPDF spokesperson Chris Magezi concealed it while speaking about Uganda’s progress in the DRC last night. Families of the deceased are being warned not to say anything to the media,” the posts add…
